The problems facing our environment necessitate that we work together- whether at the individual level or within the various groups and organizations we associate with. At an individual level, you can become an environmental advocate- an individual that lobbies for the protection of the planet and the public. This can include creating awareness of significant environmental matters, organizing environmental events, fundraising for environmental causes, and lobbying for environmental legislation. Environmental advocacy within the community you live in not only provides an opportunity for change but also helps create a culture of awareness that is supportive of the environment. When you choose this path, be sure to join KCNRN as it brings together individuals, organizations, and governments intent on conserving the environment.
To advocate for the environment effectively, you should lead by example by incorporating environmentally friendly practices. This can be achieved through simple changes to your own life such as;
Recycle. In Africa, five pounds of solid waste is generated by one person every single day. A lot of this can be diverted through donating and recycling, making it possible to achieve a second use of the resource while reducing waste.
Conserve Water. Cut back on the amounts of water you use through simple changes such as how much water you use to do the laundry, how often you shower or switching to appliances that use minimal water.
Cut down on electricity. Despite the convenience electricity has afforded us, its production and use have significant detriments to the environment. You can cut down on this by turning off appliances and lights when not in use, using energy-efficient appliances, or switching to the use of renewable energy.
Turn to reuse containers. Plastics are a menace in the country, contributing to the majority of the waste in the country’s water bodies that eventually harms wildlife. You can prevent this by using reusable containers that do not require to be thrown away after a single use.
If you have a strong passion for environmental conservation and social justice, becoming an environmental advocate could just be the way to go.
